Eleven Students, One Kind of Relief

A Norwegian interview study asked eleven accelerated maths students what the experience was actually like. Their answer was quietly consistent: acceleration helped, and the real problem came earlier.

What the research found

This is a small, careful study. Jørgen Smedsrud, writing in Frontiers in Psychology in 2018, interviewed eleven Norwegian students who had accelerated one or more years in mathematics. All were aged between sixteen and nineteen. All had passed maths R2, the highest-difficulty level in the second year of Norwegian upper secondary school. Three were girls and eight were boys. They were recruited through a university accelerated-maths programme, so they were, by design, high performers who had done well.

The method matters here, so it is worth stating plainly. This is a qualitative interview study. Smedsrud conducted semi-structured interviews and analysed them thematically using NVivo software, grounded in two established models of giftedness (Renzulli’s three-ring concept and Mönks’ multifactor model). Qualitative work of this kind does not measure how much acceleration helps, and it cannot compare accelerated students against a group who were not accelerated. What it does instead is listen closely to lived experience and report, in the students’ own words, what the process felt like from the inside.

The first finding was striking in its consistency. Every one of the eleven students described acceleration and ability grouping as something positive. Smedsrud reports no accounts of harmful peer competition or pressure inside the ability group. The worry parents often carry about acceleration, that it will breed rivalry or isolate a child, did not appear in these interviews. Instead the group offered relief. One student put it simply: “I met others that thought like me; it was really fulfilling.”

The second finding pointed backwards in time. The students did not describe secondary acceleration as the moment things went wrong. They described the years before it as the problem. They reported “far too few challenges in primary school and middle school,” and with that came boredom and a drift in motivation. Several noted, too, that their earlier teachers had not always had enough mathematical knowledge to stretch them. The message was less “acceleration was hard” and more “the ordinary classroom, for years, gave us too little.”

The third finding concerned the girls. The three girls in the study described more stress in high-performance situations, particularly during tests, and a lower academic self-concept than the boys reported, even though they were performing at the same level. This is a small number of students and Smedsrud is careful not to overclaim, but it echoes a pattern seen elsewhere: equal ability does not always mean equal confidence.

One further note runs through the interviews. These students felt different from their average peers, and they knew it. “I feel like I have a different approach and understanding,” one said. The ability group did not erase that difference. It simply gave them somewhere the difference was ordinary.

What it means for you and your child

The most useful thing this study offers a parent is reassurance about a fear, not a promise about an outcome. Acceleration is often resisted on the grounds that it will overwhelm a child or set them apart socially. In these eleven cases it did neither. The students framed it as welcome, and the peer group as a source of belonging rather than strain. That is worth holding onto if your child is capable and under-stretched, and you are hesitating.

But be precise about what this evidence can carry. Eleven students, all of them successful, all recruited from a programme that selects high performers, cannot tell us that acceleration works for every gifted child, or that it caused their good outcomes. The students who struggled, or who were never identified in the first place, are simply not in this room. Smedsrud says as much: the sample is small, generalisation is limited, and the selection criteria excluded underachievers by design. Treat these findings as a clear window into one experience, not a general rule.

The finding that should shift a parent’s attention is the one about the early years. The students did not trace their difficulties to being moved ahead. They traced them to the long stretch beforehand, when the ordinary classroom asked too little of them. This reframes the practical question. It is not only “should my child skip ahead later?” It is “is my child being adequately challenged right now?” Boredom in a bright eight-year-old is not a small thing. Left alone, it can quietly erode the motivation that later acceleration depends on.

The point about the girls deserves a parent’s calm attention rather than alarm. If you have a capable daughter who performs well but describes herself as not good enough, or who dreads tests out of proportion to her results, that gap between ability and confidence is worth taking seriously in its own right. It is not evidence of lesser talent. In this study it sat alongside identical performance.

There is also a quieter lesson about belonging. Part of what helped these students was meeting others who thought as they did. A child who feels like the odd one out in every maths lesson is carrying something. An ability group, a specialist club, a summer programme, a single like-minded friend, any of these can supply the same relief the study describes, even where formal acceleration is not on the table.

So the honest summary is this. One thoughtful study found that eleven accelerated students looked back on the experience warmly, located the real harm in the under-challenging years that came before, and hinted that able girls may carry more anxiety than their results warrant. It does not prove acceleration is right for your child. It does suggest that the more urgent question is whether they are being met, today, at the level they are actually working at.
