Executive Function Tracks With Achievement, But Not By How Much

A meta-analysis of nearly 8,000 primary-school children finds a moderate, consistent link between executive function and academic performance. It cannot tell you whether one causes the other.

What the research found

In 2019, three researchers at the University of Zaragoza set out to answer a narrow question. In children aged six to twelve, how closely does executive function relate to how well they do at school? Executive function is the set of mental skills we use to hold information in mind, resist distraction, and switch between tasks. Working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility are its usual parts.

Rather than run a new study, the authors gathered the existing ones. This is a meta-analysis: a study of studies. They pooled 21 samples drawn from 19 articles, covering 7,947 children across the primary years. The sample was close to evenly split by sex. Children with clinical diagnoses were excluded, as were studies that did not report clear statistics.

The headline figure is a correlation of r = 0.365, with a 95% confidence interval running from 0.309 to 0.419. In plain terms, a correlation of 0.365 is moderate. It means executive function and achievement rise and fall together to a meaningful but partial degree. If you knew nothing about a child except their executive-function score, you could predict their school performance somewhat better than a guess, but far from perfectly. Most of the difference between children lies elsewhere.

Working memory was the single most-studied and strongest component, appearing in 14 of the 21 samples with a correlation of r = 0.370. The link to mathematics (r = 0.365) was marginally stronger than the link to language (r = 0.350). The authors did not report separate pooled figures for inhibition and cognitive flexibility, which is itself a limitation of what the evidence base could support.

One finding deserves careful reading, because it is easy to misstate. The authors’ written conclusion says the predictive power of executive function is “even higher at the early ages.” Yet their own statistical test tells a different story. When they ran a meta-regression to check whether age changed the strength of the relationship, age was not significant. In other words, the numbers did not confirm that the link is stronger in younger children. The claim about early ages is the authors’ interpretation, not a result the analysis established. Where the words and the statistics disagree, the statistics are the firmer ground.

What it means for you and your child

Start with what this study does not show. It is correlational. It tells you that executive function and achievement travel together in these children. It cannot tell you that better executive function causes better grades. The arrow could point the other way, with the demands of schoolwork building these mental skills. Or a third factor, such as home environment, sleep, or the quality of teaching, could be lifting both at once. The authors are explicit that their design is “descriptive and correlational.” No meta-analysis of correlations, however large, can settle causation.

It also cannot tell you much about your particular child. A correlation of 0.365 is a statement about a population of nearly 8,000 children. It describes a trend across many, not a rule for any one. Plenty of children with modest executive-function scores do well, and plenty with strong scores do not. The figure is real and worth knowing. It is not a prediction you can lay over a single kitchen table.

The practical takeaway is modest, which is the honest kind. Skills like holding instructions in mind, staying with a task, and shutting out distraction do relate to school performance across the primary years. Supporting those skills is sensible. But this study gives no licence to buy an executive-function training programme in the hope of raising marks. Whether such training transfers to real academic gains is a separate question that this research was not designed to answer, and the wider evidence on that question is genuinely mixed.

Two limits the authors name are worth carrying with you. The relationship they found was moderate, not dominant, so most of what shapes a child’s academic performance sits outside these measures. And the studies drew nothing from Africa or South Asia, so the findings speak to some populations and not others.

If your child struggles with focus or with keeping track of multi-step tasks, that is worth attention in its own right, and a specialist can assess it properly. What this paper offers is a calibrated sense of proportion. Executive function matters at school. It matters a moderate amount. And a single meta-analysis, careful as this one is, marks a correlation rather than a cause.
