For Gifted Students, Knowing How to Learn Mattered
A German study followed 341 adolescents and found that for gifted students, knowing how to manage their own learning predicted achievement over and above intelligence itself.
What the research found
It is tempting to assume that for a gifted child, raw intelligence does the heavy lifting, and that everything else is decoration. This study, conducted in Germany, put that assumption to a careful test. It asked whether something beyond intelligence, a student's skill at managing their own learning, helped explain how their achievement developed over time, specifically among the gifted.
The researchers followed 341 adolescents across two waves, in the sixth grade (average age about 12) and the eighth grade (average age about 14). Alongside intelligence and school achievement, they measured metacognitive competences: the skills a student uses to understand and steer their own learning. They distinguished two kinds. Declarative metacognition is knowing about how learning works, what strategies exist and when they help. Procedural metacognition is the doing, actually deploying those strategies while working. They also measured need for cognition, a student's appetite for effortful thinking.
The central finding was that metacognition earned its keep. For gifted students, procedural metacognition predicted the development of school achievement over and above intelligence, with a standardised effect of 0.139. In other words, two equally intelligent gifted students could diverge in their achievement depending on how well they actually managed their own learning. Intelligence set the stage; the strategic skill helped decide the performance.
The study also traced how these pieces fit together. Declarative metacognition and need for cognition worked interactively to predict procedural metacognition (an effect of 0.169), and procedural metacognition in turn mediated their influence on achievement. Put plainly: knowing about learning, combined with an appetite for hard thinking, fed the practical skill of managing one's work, and it was that practical skill that showed up in the grades. The authors connect this directly to the puzzle of the gifted underachiever, the able student whose results lag their ability.
It is worth being precise about what this design can and cannot show. This is a longitudinal, correlational study, not an experiment. It followed real students rather than randomly assigning anyone to have stronger metacognition, so it cannot prove that teaching these skills would cause achievement to rise, only that the two developed together in a particular pattern. The effects, while meaningful, are modest in size, and the study concerns German adolescents over one two-year window in the domain of reading comprehension.
What it means for you and your child
The most encouraging thing about this study is where it locates the difference. If a gifted child's achievement rode entirely on intelligence, there would be little for a parent or teacher to do but wait and admire. Instead, the study points to something teachable: the skill of planning, monitoring, and adjusting one's own learning. That is not a fixed endowment. It grows with practice and with the right kind of attention.
This reframes the gifted underachiever in a useful way. When an able child is not performing, the reflex is to look for a deficit in ability, or to conclude they are simply not trying. This research suggests a third possibility that is more common and more fixable: the child may not yet have the strategic habits that turn intelligence into results. They may not know how to break down a hard task, check their own understanding, or change approach when the first one stalls. Those are learnable moves.
The role of need for cognition is worth noticing too. The children who thrived were not only strategic; they had some appetite for effortful thinking. For a parent, that is a hint that cultivating a taste for hard, satisfying mental work, rather than protecting a child from all difficulty, may matter as much as any single study skill. The two seem to reinforce each other.
We would offer the same caution we always do about a single study, however well designed. This is one longitudinal analysis of German adolescents, and it maps relationships rather than proving cause. The effects are real but not large, and no single study should rewrite how you support a child. Read alongside the broad and consistent literature on self-regulated learning, though, it points in a clear and hopeful direction. On its own, it is a reason to take the how of learning seriously, even, or especially, for a child whose ability is not in doubt.
