One Hundred and Four Studies, One Uneven Picture
A 2024 systematic review pooled 104 studies of nearly 78,000 children to ask how giftedness is identified and what sets gifted children apart. The findings are real but the definitions are not settled.
What the research found
A 2024 systematic review in Frontiers in Psychology set out to answer two plain questions. How do researchers decide a child is gifted? And once they decide, what do those children look like on tests of thinking, body, and temperament? To answer, the authors gathered every study that met their criteria: 104 articles in all, covering 77,705 children aged 5 to 18 across more than 25 countries. Of those, studies that compared a gifted group against a control group accounted for 27,309 children. This is a large body of evidence, and the review is careful to describe it rather than oversell it.
The first finding is about measurement, and it is more unsettling than it sounds. There is no single agreed test for giftedness. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale was the most common tool, used in 51 of the studies. Raven’s Matrices, a test that leans less on language and culture, came second at 25. The IQ cut-off used to label a child gifted sat mostly between 120 and 130, but it varied from study to study, and some researchers used a top 5 to 10 per cent ranking instead. In other words, a child called gifted in one study might not clear the bar in another. The authors also note a drift, from the 1990s onward, toward the more culturally neutral measures like Raven’s.
The second finding concerns cognition. Across the studies, gifted children tended to outperform their peers on specific mental tasks: verbal working memory (holding and using spoken information in the moment), inhibition (holding back an automatic response), geometric problem-solving, and switching attention between tasks. One consistent pattern was an accuracy-reaction time trade-off. Gifted children were often more accurate, but not always faster. Speed and correctness are separate things, and the advantage showed up more clearly in getting the answer right than in getting it quickly.
The third finding is about psychology and, tentatively, biology. Gifted children scored higher on intrinsic motivation (doing something for its own interest rather than a reward), self-efficacy (belief in one’s own ability to succeed), openness to experience, and school grades. A smaller set of brain-imaging studies reported heightened and accelerated brain activity during hard, effortful thinking. That last point is genuinely interesting, but it rests on fewer studies and should be held loosely.
The authors are honest about the limits of what they assembled. The measurement approaches were inconsistent and poorly standardised. The terms used for cognitive functions varied between labs, so that two studies might name the same skill differently, or the same name might cover different skills. The division of children into two clean groups, gifted and not, is itself contested. And differences in how results were reported made reliable comparison hard. These are not small caveats. They shape how much weight any single conclusion can bear.
What it means for you and your child
Start with what this review can and cannot tell you. It is a systematic review of observational studies. It describes differences between groups of children; it does not establish that giftedness causes those differences, or that the differences cause later success. A gifted group scoring higher on motivation does not tell you whether the talent drives the motivation, the motivation supports the talent, or a third factor such as home environment feeds both. The review reports associations. It does not untangle cause. Keep that distinction in mind whenever a summary tempts you toward a tidy story.
The most practical takeaway is about the label itself. Because the tests and thresholds differ, a giftedness assessment is a snapshot taken with a particular instrument at a particular threshold, not a permanent fact about your child. A score of 128 on a Wechsler test and a top-decile result on Raven’s are measuring overlapping but not identical things. If your child is assessed, it is fair to ask which test was used, what cut-off was applied, and whether the result would look different under a different reasonable choice. A number near a boundary should be read as near a boundary, not as a verdict.
The cognitive findings offer a modest, useful frame. If your child is identified as gifted, the pattern in the research is one of strong specific skills, often paired with care over speed. The accuracy-reaction time trade-off is a reminder that being right and being fast are different achievements. A child who works accurately but deliberately is behaving in a way this literature would recognise, not underperforming. Timed tests may understate what such a child actually knows.
The psychological picture is encouraging but not a guarantee. Higher motivation, self-efficacy, and openness are group averages, not descriptions of any one child. Plenty of gifted children struggle with motivation, or with confidence, or with the ordinary frictions of school. The averages should not become expectations that a real child is then measured against and found wanting.
So what should a thoughtful parent do with this? Treat the review as a map of tendencies, not a diagnosis. Use it to ask better questions of schools and assessors, to understand why two reports might disagree, and to resist the pull of a single decisive number. The strongest signal in 104 studies and nearly 78,000 children is not a threshold or a trait. It is that the field is still working out how to measure what it is looking for. That honesty is worth more to you than a false precision would be.
