One Test Is Never Enough

A 2025 review of 17 studies asks how we actually find gifted children. The clearest finding is a caution: no single instrument does the job well, and the evidence base is thinner than the confident language around it suggests.

What the research found

A systematic review published this year set out to answer a plain question: what are the best current ways to identify giftedness in primary-school children? The authors searched three research databases (PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus) for studies published between 2019 and September 2024. They registered their plan in advance and followed the standard PRISMA method for screening. After filtering, 17 studies met their criteria. That is the whole evidence base under examination here. It is a modest number, and the authors are candid about it.

The studies came from around the world, with just over half (52.9 per cent) from Asia. Turkey contributed five, the United States three, and a scatter of single studies came from Spain, Italy, Brazil, the Netherlands, and elsewhere. The tools they examined fell into three groups by who fills them in: instruments used by diagnostic professionals such as psychologists (52.9 per cent of the tools), rating scales completed by teachers (24.9 per cent), and rating scales completed by families (17.6 per cent).

The headline conclusion is consistent across the strongest studies. No single method identifies gifted children reliably. Combining sources works better. This matters most for children who are routinely missed: those from low-income or minority backgrounds, and the “twice-exceptional” (children who are both gifted and have a condition such as ADHD, dyslexia, or autism). The review argues for prioritising reasoning and learning potential over IQ headline scores and marks already earned.

The individual studies add useful texture. One found that teacher nominations and a standard reasoning test overlapped only modestly, explaining between 18 and 30 per cent of the variation between them, meaning teachers and tests were largely picking up different things. Another warned against relying on a child’s Full-Scale IQ score alone, recommending narrower index scores that isolate reasoning. Several found that teachers, without training, nominate more boys than girls for creativity and carry other biases. Parents, given a good structured form, spotted gifted traits with reasonable accuracy; one parent scale reported acceptable reliability (a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.78) from just eight items.

The most important finding for a careful reader, though, is about the quality of the evidence itself. The authors rated each study for risk of bias. Eleven of the 17 (65 per cent) were judged low quality. Only six clearly defined a comparison group. And, tellingly, no tool had been independently evaluated by a separate research team, so each instrument’s reputation rests largely on the people who built it.

What this means for you and your child

The practical message is reassuring in one direction and sobering in another. Reassuring, because it confirms what thoughtful parents often sense: a child is more than one number. A single IQ figure, a single test sitting, a single teacher’s impression, none of these should decide whether your child is gifted or what support they receive. The review is clear that the exclusive use of traditional tests is “insufficient and may be discriminatory” in diverse settings. If a school or clinic is making a call on one score, that is a fair question to raise.

Sobering, because the study cannot tell you which tool is best for your child, nor guarantee that any of them works well. This is a review of how identification is done, not proof that better identification produces better outcomes. It does not show that a particular test, followed by particular support, changes a child’s academic or emotional trajectory. That causal question is simply not what these 17 studies were built to answer, and no review can conjure evidence its source studies did not gather.

Two cautions deserve weight. First, the evidence is genuinely thin: two-thirds of the studies were low quality, and no instrument has been checked by an independent team. Treat confident marketing around any single “gifted test” with scepticism. Second, human judgement carries bias. Teacher and parent nominations are valuable precisely because they catch children that tests miss, but the same review documents how untrained adults over-nominate boys and lean on myths about what a gifted child looks like. Your observations matter; so does knowing they can mislead.

If you are navigating this, a reasonable stance follows from the paper. Ask for more than one source of evidence. Expect a professional to look at how your child reasons and learns, not only what they have already achieved or scored. If your child may be twice-exceptional, say so early, because these are the children the standard tests most often overlook. And hold the label lightly. Identification is a starting point for matching support to a child, not a verdict on their worth or a promise about their future.

One study, even a careful one summarising seventeen others, is a snapshot of a young and uneven field. It tells us plainly that the honest answer to “is my child gifted?” is rarely a single clean yes or no, and that anyone offering you one on the strength of a single instrument is claiming more than the evidence allows.
