Only Inhibition Ran in Both Directions
A two-wave study of 376 preschoolers found that early self-control problems and early attention problems each predicted the other eight months later. The two other parts of executive function predicted nothing at all.
What the research found
Executive function is the family of mental skills we use to control ourselves: holding information in mind, resisting distraction, and steering our own behaviour toward a goal. Researchers have long argued about how it relates to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in very young children. Do weak self-control skills come first and help produce attention problems? Or do attention problems come first and get in the way of building self-control? Most earlier studies looked at a single moment in time, so they could not answer that question of order.
This study tried to. Liheng Fan and Yinling Wang, of Henan University in China, followed 376 children aged four to six years across a single school year. Parents completed two questionnaires in October 2018 and again in June 2019, an eight-month gap. One questionnaire rated three components of executive function: working memory, inhibition (the ability to hold back an impulse), and regulation. The other rated ADHD symptoms. Because the same children were measured twice, the researchers could use a technique called cross-lagged analysis, which asks whether a trait at the start of the year predicts a different trait at the end, after accounting for where each child already started.
The headline result concerns inhibition. Children with more inhibition problems in October had slightly more ADHD symptoms in June (a coefficient of 0.12). And the reverse also held: children with more ADHD symptoms in October had slightly more inhibition problems in June (again 0.12). Both effects were statistically significant, if modest in size. In plain terms, weak impulse control and attention problems appear to feed each other over time. The authors describe this as a relationship with “some reciprocal causality.”
The other two components of executive function did nothing. Neither working memory nor regulation predicted later ADHD symptoms, and ADHD symptoms did not predict either of them later. The coefficients were tiny (0.07, 0.04, 0.01) and none reached significance. So the reciprocal loop the study found was specific to inhibition, not to executive function as a whole.
Two further points give useful context. Both executive function and ADHD symptoms were fairly stable across the year: a child’s October rating strongly predicted their June rating. And the three parts of executive function correlated with ADHD symptoms at any single point in time. The novelty here is not that the traits travel together, which was already known, but the direction and timing the two-wave design could tease apart.
What it means for you and your child
The most honest way to read this study is narrowly. It suggests that in early childhood, difficulty holding back impulses and difficulty sustaining attention are entangled, and that each may worsen the other over a school year. If your four- or six-year-old struggles to wait, to stop, or to resist a distraction, that is worth noticing rather than waiting out, because the study hints these difficulties can compound rather than simply fade. Early attention and early self-control seem to grow, or falter, together.
At the same time, the effects are small. A coefficient of 0.12 means inhibition and attention nudge each other, not that one determines the other. Most of what predicted a child’s June scores was simply their October scores. So this is not a study that says a distractible four-year-old is destined for anything. It describes a gentle, two-way drift in a group of children, not a fate for any one child.
It is also important to be clear about what “ADHD” means here. These children were not clinically assessed. Parents rated symptoms on a brief five-item questionnaire, and the authors deliberately studied ordinary preschoolers, most with only mild, below-threshold traits. That measure was also the study’s weakest instrument, with modest internal reliability. So the paper speaks to everyday variation in attention among typical young children, not to diagnosed ADHD. Take a real diagnostic question to a paediatrician or clinical psychologist, not to a questionnaire.
A few other cautions follow from the design. Everything rests on a single reporter, the parent, using questionnaires alone; the authors themselves recommend that future work add direct testing of children, because how you measure a skill can change the relationships you find. The window was only eight months, at one narrow slice of childhood, so it cannot show how these traits behave over years. And because the sample was drawn from two kindergartens in one Chinese city, the specific numbers may not transfer neatly to other settings.
What can a parent reasonably take from it? That inhibition, the plain skill of stopping and waiting, appears to sit near the centre of early attention difficulties, and is a sensible thing to support through patient, ordinary means: predictable routines, games that reward waiting and taking turns, and calm scaffolding rather than pressure. The study does not test any intervention, so it cannot promise that building inhibition prevents ADHD. Its contribution is more modest and more useful: it points to where, in the tangle of early self-control, the two-way traffic actually runs.
