Reading Minds Came First, Then the Conversations

A two-year study of 106 autistic children found that an earlier grasp of other people’s mental states predicted later social behaviour. It is a real signal, and a modest one.

What the research found

Researchers in Taiwan followed 106 children with autism spectrum disorder over two years. They wanted to answer a specific question: does a child’s early ability to understand other people’s thoughts and feelings tell us anything about how that child will interact socially two years on? The ability in question has a name in psychology. It is called theory of mind, and it means grasping that other people have their own beliefs, intentions and knowledge, which may differ from your own. A child with a strong theory of mind understands that another person can be mistaken, or can want something the child does not want.

The team measured each child’s theory of mind at the start. Two years later, they measured two things. The first was reciprocal social behaviour: the back-and-forth of real interaction, such as taking turns and responding to another person. The second was broader social functioning: how the child managed socially day to day. They then used a statistical method called path analysis to see whether the early scores predicted the later ones.

They did. Earlier theory of mind predicted the children’s later reciprocal social behaviours, with a modest but statistically detectable effect (B = 3.53, p = 0.039). It also predicted later social functioning, and here the signal was stronger and more reliable (B roughly 1.79 to 1.87, p < 0.001). In plain terms, children who understood other minds earlier tended to interact and function somewhat better later. The authors also noted that children with aloof or passive interaction styles showed less turn-taking in their reciprocal behaviours.

It is worth being precise about what these numbers are. A p-value tells you how surprised you should be to see a result this strong if there were truly no relationship at all. A small p-value, such as the p < 0.001 for social functioning, means the pattern is very unlikely to be a fluke of this particular sample. It does not tell you how large or how useful the effect is. The prediction of reciprocal behaviour, at p = 0.039, is real but sits much closer to the line where a result could plausibly have arisen by chance.

This is one study, of one group of children, followed for two years. It is a well-designed longitudinal study, which is more informative than a single snapshot, because it watches the same children change over time. But it is still a single sample from a single place. The finding is a coherent piece of evidence, not a settled fact.

What it means for you and your child

The honest headline is this. In autistic children, an earlier grasp of other people’s minds is associated with better social interaction later. That association is real in this study, and for social functioning it is fairly robust. What the study cannot tell you is whether one causes the other.

This distinction matters, so it is worth sitting with. The study shows prediction, not causation. Theory of mind arriving first, and social behaviour improving later, is consistent with the idea that understanding minds helps children interact. But it is equally consistent with a third thing driving both: general language ability, overall cognitive development, or the simple fact that some children were further along to begin with. A follow-up study measures the order in which things appear. It does not, on its own, prove that changing the first would change the second.

So this is not evidence that a theory-of-mind training programme will improve your child’s social life. That is a separate claim, and it needs a different kind of study: one where children are randomly assigned to receive such training or not, and then compared. This paper does not do that, and it does not claim to. Be cautious of any product or programme that cites research like this as proof that its exercises will produce social gains. The research is a reason to investigate that idea, not a demonstration that it works.

What the study does offer parents is quieter and still useful. It suggests that a child’s early understanding of other people is worth paying attention to, because it travels with later social development rather than being separate from it. If your child struggles to grasp that other people know different things, or want different things, that difficulty is unlikely to be trivial. It appears to be woven into the wider picture of how a child interacts.

The practical posture we would suggest is patient and observant. Notice how your child reasons about other people, not only how they behave in the moment. Support the everyday situations where understanding another mind matters: shared attention, taking turns, explaining why someone might feel as they do. These are worth doing on their own terms, whatever the research eventually settles about cause and effect. And hold the findings lightly. One good study of 106 children points in a direction. It does not draw the map.
