Sensory Seeking Predicts Self-Control Only in ADHD
A model that accounted for 43 percent of the variance in one group of children returned nothing in another.
What the two questionnaires asked
The Child Sensory Profile-2 walks a parent through a long list of ordinary situations and asks how often the child responds in a particular way to sound, touch, movement, taste and light. The answers sort into four patterns. Seeking describes a child who pursues sensation and goes looking for more of it. Avoiding describes a child who acts to get away from it. Sensitivity covers the child who notices a great deal and endures it, and registration the child who takes in less of the surrounding world than other children do.
The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, second edition, runs to 63 items and is also completed by a parent. Among its scores are inhibition, meaning the capacity to stop an action already underway, and shift, meaning the capacity to move from one demand to the next. It also produces a broader index for emotion regulation.
The parents of 120 children aged 7 to 14 completed both forms for a 2024 study in Brain Sciences, led by Zhi Huang at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. Thirty-two of the children had a diagnosis of autism, 28 had ADHD, 30 had both, and 30 had neither. All scored above 70 on full-scale IQ, and roughly four in five were boys.
The group with both diagnoses scored most atypically almost everywhere: higher than the autism group on seeking, avoiding and registration, higher than both single-diagnosis groups on avoiding, on inhibition, on shift, and on the global executive score. That much repeats what earlier work had found.
The result that carries the paper is narrower. Within the ADHD group, sensory seeking correlated with inhibition difficulty at 0.64, and in a regression that also included age and non-verbal IQ, seeking accounted for 43 percent of the variance in inhibition scores. Within the group that had both diagnoses, the same analysis produced no significant model at all. Seeking, avoiding and registration each correlated with inhibition there at around 0.4, but none of them predicted it.
What did predict something in the combined group was avoidance. It correlated with the emotion regulation index at 0.72 and accounted for half its variance, and it accounted for 28 percent of the variance in shift.
What a parent can take from it
The authors read the ADHD result through an arousal account of the condition, in which an under-aroused nervous system pursues stimulation in order to raise itself to a workable level, and that pursuit is the same behaviour that pulls the child off the task in front of them. A child who seeks sensation strongly, on this account, will struggle to stop an action once it has begun, because stopping is the thing the seeking is working against. The data fit the account without testing it, since a correlation between two questionnaires cannot show which condition produces the other.
In the group with both diagnoses, that route to inhibition difficulty did not appear, and the authors take its absence to mean the attention problems there begin somewhere else, in top-down control rather than in the pull of sensation. That reading is their interpretation of a null result in 30 children, and a null in a sample that size can arise from the size of the sample as easily as from the children in it. It is a proposal about mechanism, offered for testing.
Both questionnaires were completed by the same parent about the same child, which the authors name as a limitation. A parent who experiences a child as difficult tends to score both forms higher, and some part of every correlation reported here belongs to the rater and not to the child. Direct observation of the children would settle how much.
What survives that caution is the pattern of where the associations were strongest, which differed from one group to the next.
Parents of children with both diagnoses often describe a day that goes wrong in a supermarket, a crowded corridor, a school hall, and goes wrong emotionally before it goes wrong attentionally. In this sample the sensory measure most closely associated with emotional regulation was avoidance, and it was associated with it more closely than any sensory measure was associated with attention. If that is the version of your child you recognise, one study has now put numbers beside it.
