Spelling Trouble Reaches the Writing Hand
A small Spanish study tracked the pen between letters. In children with dyslexia, the hard-to-spell words slowed the pauses you cannot see on the page.
What the research found
We tend to think of spelling and handwriting as two separate skills. One is a matter of knowing the letters; the other is a matter of moving the pen. This study, published in Frontiers in Psychology in 2020, tested whether the line between them is really so clean. The answer, in short, is that it is not.
The researchers worked with 36 Spanish-speaking children, aged nine to twelve. Eighteen had a diagnosis of dyslexia; eighteen were classmates of the same age with no reading difficulty. The two groups were carefully matched, down to the split of ten boys and eight girls in each. The children’s reading was measurably different from the start: the dyslexic group took an average of 58.6 seconds to read a word list that the others finished in 22.2 seconds, and they lagged just as far behind on invented pseudowords.
Each child heard twenty-four short sentences, spoken twice, and wrote them out on a digitising tablet. The clever part is what the tablet records. It does not only capture ink on the page. It captures the pen while it hovers in the air between strokes and between letters. Those airborne moments are pauses, and pauses are where the mind does its work. If a word is hard to spell, the thinking has to happen somewhere, and it often shows up as a longer hover before the hand moves.
The researchers built two difficulties into the final noun of each sentence. Some words were common, some rare. Some were spelled in a straightforward way, others contained a sound that could be written more than one way, which in Spanish means a genuine spelling decision. Then they watched the pen.
Two patterns stood out. First, word frequency slowed the dyslexic children in a way it did not slow the others. When a word was rare rather than common, their in-air pauses during the preceding word stretched from about 35 milliseconds to about 61 milliseconds; the control children barely changed, moving from 30 to 40. The statistical test for this difference between groups was significant. Second, the spelling itself mattered. Words containing an inconsistent, ambiguous sound produced longer pauses before writing began, and the dyslexic children’s pen slowed on the first syllable in a way tied to that ambiguity.
The accuracy figures fill in the picture. On high-frequency but inconsistent words, the dyslexic children spelled 63 per cent correctly against the controls’ 82 per cent. So the difficulty was not merely mental. It leaked into the movement of the hand. Even the plain act of writing a small connecting word took the dyslexic group longer to execute on paper. Spelling difficulty, in other words, did not stay in the head. It spilled into the motor act of handwriting.
What it means for you and your child
The practical lesson here is about what you are seeing when your child writes slowly. It is easy to read a laboured hand as carelessness, or as a fine-motor problem to be drilled away with more penmanship practice. This study suggests a different reading. For a child with dyslexia, the slowness may be spelling trouble wearing a handwriting disguise. The pen stalls because the word underneath it is uncertain.
That reframing changes where you would sensibly put your effort. If the pauses come from spelling uncertainty, then more handwriting drills address the symptom rather than the cause. Strengthening the child’s grip on spelling patterns, and building automatic recall of the words they meet most often, is more likely to loosen the pen than practising loops and letters in isolation. The rare and irregular words are where the strain concentrates, so those are worth targeted, patient attention.
It also helps to be gentle about pace. A child who writes slowly may be spending real effort you cannot see, in those small airborne pauses between letters. Judging the output by speed alone will misread the child. In a classroom, this is part of the case for extra time, for reducing the amount a child must copy, and for separating the assessment of ideas from the mechanics of getting them down.
A few cautions are worth keeping in view, because this is one small study and it does not claim more than it found. The sample was 36 children, all writing in Spanish, a language whose spelling works differently from English. The regular, transparent sounds of Spanish are not the same puzzle as English spelling, so the exact numbers here will not transfer directly. The design shows that spelling difficulty and handwriting difficulty travel together in these children; it does not prove that one causes the other in any simple way. The authors themselves note they cannot yet say how much of the effect reflects sheer lack of exposure to written words, rather than a deeper processing difference, and they call for more research on that question.
What the study does establish is modest but genuinely useful: in children with dyslexia, the difficulty of a word reaches all the way to the hand. That is worth holding onto the next time slow, effortful writing tempts you to conclude your child simply is not trying. The effort may be entirely real, and quietly happening in the space just above the page.
