The Brain Got Quieter, Not Busier

A small randomised trial trained preschoolers in mindfulness for eight weeks. Their working memory improved, and their prefrontal cortex appears to have started working more economically.

What the research found

Sixty-eight children took part in this study. Their average age was just under five years. After an initial round of testing, the researchers randomly assigned them to two groups. One group of thirty-seven children received mindfulness training. The other thirty-one carried on as usual. Random assignment matters here, because it is what allows the authors to speak, cautiously, about effects rather than mere coincidences.

The training was modest in scale. Fifteen sessions, twice a week, twenty minutes each. That is eight weeks of practice. The programme was adapted from a well-known curriculum called MindUP and was built around three simple themes: the child’s own attentive brain, the five senses, and the wider world. In practice this meant breathing exercises, physical relaxation, guided mental imagery, and gentle attention to the body. Nothing exotic, and nothing a preschool could not run.

Two things were measured. The first was behaviour. Children played a working-memory game in which small monkeys appeared on trees, vanished for two seconds, and had to be located again from memory. On this task the trained children became more accurate than the control group. The difference was statistically clear (Z = 2.594, P < 0.01). Put plainly: after the training, the children remembered where things were more often.

The second measurement was of the brain itself, using a technique called functional near-infrared spectroscopy, or fNIRS. It is a soft cap that shines harmless light through the scalp to track blood flow in the outer layer of the brain. Forty-four channels covered the frontal region, the part most involved in planning and self-control. Children wore it while sorting cards by changing rules, a classic test of mental flexibility, of the ability to switch from one way of thinking to another.

Here the finding is easy to misread. The researchers analysed the complexity of the brain signals using a measure called sample entropy. In the trained group, complexity did not rise. It fell, and significantly so, across both sides of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (t = 4.713 and t = 4.964, both P < 0.001) and in the region between them. The between-group difference was strong (Z = -3.674, P < 0.001). The authors read this reduction as a sign of efficiency. A brain that has learned a task well, they argue, need not thrash about. It settles. Fewer resources, less variability, the same or better result. The brain got quieter, not busier.

What it means for you and your child

It is tempting to take a study like this and conclude that mindfulness makes young children cleverer. That is more than the evidence will bear, and the authors themselves are careful not to say it. What they show is narrower and, in its way, more interesting: eight weeks of simple attention practice was followed by better performance on one memory task and by a measurable change in how the prefrontal cortex behaved. Those are two genuine findings. They are not a promise about school results, IQ, or life outcomes.

Keep the size of the study in view. Sixty-eight children is a real trial, and randomisation is a real strength, but it is still one small sample of one age group in one setting. The authors list their own caution honestly. fNIRS sees only the surface of the brain and cannot match the detail of an MRI scanner. Factors such as age, sex, and intelligence were not fully matched between the groups, so some of the difference could reflect who ended up where rather than the training alone. A single study, however well run, tells us what happened once. It does not tell us what will happen again. That takes replication.

The efficiency finding deserves a particular note, because it is the kind of result that is easy to dress up. Lower brain complexity sounds worse, not better, and the interpretation that it reflects a more economical brain is reasonable but not proven. It is the authors’ reading of the pattern, and other readings are possible. Treat it as a promising clue about mechanism, not as an established fact about your child’s neurology.

So what is the sensible takeaway for a parent. Short, structured attention practice appears to be safe, is inexpensive, and in this trial was associated with a small gain in working memory in preschoolers. That is a reasonable basis for trying it, and a poor basis for expecting transformation. If your child struggles with holding information in mind or with switching between tasks, brief mindfulness exercises are a low-risk thing to explore, ideally alongside the ordinary drivers of executive function: sleep, play, conversation, and time without a screen.

The honest summary is quiet, which suits the subject. A gentle intervention produced a small, measurable change in young children’s memory and in the workings of the part of the brain that governs self-control. It is an encouraging early signal. It is not yet a prescription, and it should not be sold as one.
