The Effect Grows With Frequency
A 2024 meta-analysis of 23 trials finds that physical activity which also makes children think improves executive function modestly overall, and substantially when it happens more than twice a week.
What the research found
In 2024, four researchers pooled the results of 23 randomised controlled trials to ask a specific question: does physical activity that also demands thinking improve executive function in children? Executive function is the family of mental skills we use to plan, resist distraction, hold information in mind, and switch between tasks. The interventions they examined were not simple exercise. They were what the authors call cognitively engaging physical activity: movement that requires attention, memory, or problem-solving at the same time. A game with changing rules, or a coordination drill that also loads the mind, would qualify. Running on a treadmill would not.
The pooled sample was large. Across the 23 trials, 2,857 children took part, ranging in age from 4 to 16. All were healthy. The trials were randomised, which means children were assigned to the activity or to a comparison group by chance, and this is the design that lets researchers speak, cautiously, about cause rather than mere association.
For overall executive function, the combined effect was a standardised mean difference of 0.32, with a 95% confidence interval running from 0.14 to 0.51. A standardised mean difference is a way of expressing a result on a common scale so that findings from different tests can be added together. A value of 0.32 is a small-to-moderate effect. Because the confidence interval sits entirely above zero, the finding is statistically reliable in the sense that chance alone is an unlikely explanation.
Two sub-skills showed similar gains. Inhibitory control, the ability to hold back an automatic response, improved by 0.35 (95% CI 0.06 to 0.65). Working memory, the ability to keep information active in mind, improved by 0.34 (95% CI 0.02 to 0.67). Both intervals stay above zero, though they run close to it. Cognitive flexibility, the ability to switch between tasks or rules, improved by 0.26, but here the confidence interval ran from minus 0.11 to 0.62. Because it crosses zero, the authors treat this result as not statistically significant. On the evidence gathered, they cannot rule out that the true effect on flexibility is nothing.
The most striking pattern came from the moderators, the analyses that ask which versions of an intervention worked best. Duration mattered: programmes longer than six weeks produced an effect of 0.38, while shorter ones (0.22) were not reliable. Session length mattered a little: sessions over 20 minutes edged ahead. Frequency mattered most of all. Programmes running more than twice a week produced an effect of 0.89, a large one, while those at twice a week or fewer produced 0.12, an effect indistinguishable from zero. The benefit, in other words, concentrated in the more frequent programmes.
What it means for you and your child
The honest headline is that this kind of activity appears to help, modestly, and that dose seems to matter. That is a useful thing to know, but it should be held lightly, and the study itself gives several reasons why.
The first is heterogeneity, a plain word for how much the trials differed from one another. Here it was very high: the statistic the authors report, I-squared, reached 91.1 per cent for overall executive function, and ran between 86 and 94 per cent across the sub-skills. When a number that high accompanies a pooled result, it means the individual studies were not measuring quite the same thing in quite the same way. The average of 0.32 is real, but it is an average across a genuinely mixed set of programmes, ages, and tests. It is not a precise estimate of what any single child would gain.
The second reason is the age range itself, and the authors name it as a limitation. The children spanned 4 to 16 years. Cognitive development is, in their words, age- and sex-specific: a seven-year-old and a fifteen-year-old are at different points, and the effect of an intervention may differ for each. Because the analysis did not separate results by age or sex, the authors ask that the findings be interpreted carefully. A result that pools a preschooler and a teenager cannot tell you precisely what to expect for your own child.
There are grounds for some confidence. The trials were randomised, their average quality score was reasonable (7.6 out of 11), and a formal test found no sign of publication bias, the tendency for positive results to be published while null ones quietly disappear. These are marks of a careful review. But a meta-analysis inherits the limits of the studies it contains. It can show that a pattern holds across many trials; it cannot manufacture certainty that the individual trials lacked.
So what follows for a family? If your child already does an activity that combines movement with thinking, martial arts with sequences to learn, team sports with shifting tactics, dance with choreography to remember, this evidence gives a modest reason to value it, and to favour something they do several times a week rather than once. The frequency finding is the practical one worth carrying away.
What the study does not license is treating such activity as a treatment for a specific difficulty, or as a substitute for direct academic support where that is what a child needs. The gains measured here are averages on cognitive tests, not documented improvements in schoolwork, and the flexibility result did not reach significance at all. The sensible reading is quiet and specific: frequent, thoughtfully designed active play is good for children, this study adds a little weight to the case, and the strongest claim it supports is about consistency, not intensity.
