The Primary Outcome Did Not Move

A small summer trial asked whether parents could deliver a reading intervention to children with dyslexia. On the measure that mattered most, nothing changed. On a narrower one, something did.

What the research found

A 2023 randomised controlled trial in the French journal Encéphale asked a practical question. Can parents, working at home over the summer, deliver a structured reading intervention to their child with dyslexia? The researchers, L. Kerjean, P. Bénard and H. Peyre, recruited 22 children in the third to fifth grades and split them into two groups. This is a small study, and the authors say so plainly.

One group received a specific technique called repeated reading. The child reads the same short passage several times until it becomes smoother and faster. The other group worked through an adapted summer holiday workbook, the kind of general revision booklet many families use, modified for children with reading difficulties. Both programmes ran for six weeks. The children’s reading was measured on standardised French tests before the summer and again after it.

The headline result is a quiet one. On the study’s primary outcome, there was no difference between the two groups. That primary outcome was an aggregate score built from reading lists of regular words, irregular words and invented pseudo-words. In plain terms, it captured how accurately a child could decode text. On that core measure of reading skill, the children who did repeated reading did no better than the children who did the workbook. Reading performance in both groups was, in the authors’ word, stable across the summer.

The trial did find one thing. On a secondary measure, the number of words a child could read aloud in one minute, the two groups diverged. The repeated reading group improved by 0.17 of a standard deviation. The workbook group declined by 0.24 of a standard deviation. The gap between them was statistically significant, with a p-value of 0.015. A standard deviation is a way of expressing how far a score sits from the average, so these are modest shifts in opposite directions rather than dramatic gains.

Two features of the design deserve weight. First, this was a randomised controlled trial, meaning children were allocated to groups by chance. That design is what allows researchers to speak about cause rather than mere association. Second, the intervention was acceptable to families. Only 9 per cent of the repeated reading group dropped out, which is a good sign that the approach was manageable at home. The authors conclude cautiously that parent-led repeated reading may improve reading fluency over the summer, and that further studies are needed to confirm it.

What this means for your child

The honest summary is that this study offers a small, specific signal and no grand promise. It is worth understanding precisely what it did and did not show, because the distinction matters for any decision you make.

What it did not show is that repeated reading improves your child’s underlying reading ability. The measure designed to capture that, decoding accuracy across different word types, did not move. When a study’s main pre-planned outcome shows no effect, that is the result that carries the most weight. Findings from secondary measures are genuinely useful, but they are also more likely to arise by chance, precisely because researchers examine several of them. A fluency gain that emerges as a secondary finding, in 22 children, is a lead to be followed rather than a fact to be banked.

What it did suggest is narrower and still valuable. Repeated reading may help with fluency, the speed and ease of reading aloud, and it can be done by parents without professional supervision. For a child with dyslexia, summer often brings a quiet slide backwards. It is telling that the workbook group’s fluency declined while the repeated reading group’s held and slightly improved. Holding ground across a long break is not nothing.

Keep the size of the effect in proportion. A shift of 0.17 of a standard deviation is small. It is the kind of change that is real but not transformative, the sort a parent might not notice day to day. This is one modest trial, in one language, with a French testing battery, over a single summer. It cannot tell you what will happen over a school year, in English, or for your particular child. No single study can.

If your child has dyslexia and you are looking for something structured to do over the holidays, repeated reading is a reasonable, low-cost, evidence-informed option, especially for building fluency and resisting summer regression. It is not a substitute for the systematic, phonics-based instruction that remains the foundation of dyslexia support, and this study does not claim otherwise. Treat it as a helpful supplement with a plausible but unproven benefit, and pair it with the guidance of whoever knows your child’s reading best.
