The Test That Does Not Ask a Child to Read
A small Italian study asked whether a naming-speed task could tell dyslexia apart from the ordinary struggles of a child still learning the language. For one group, the answer was clean. For another, it was more complicated than the headline suggests.
What the research found
When a child reads slowly, a teacher faces a hard question. Is this a learning difference, or is this a child who simply has not yet mastered the language of instruction? The two look alike on a reading test, and getting the answer wrong carries a cost either way. A 2022 study from Italy set out to find a marker that could tell them apart without asking the child to read at all.
The marker is called Rapid Automatized Naming, or RAN. It measures how quickly a child can name a repeating set of familiar items laid out in a grid. The researchers built a version they called RAN-Shapes, using five simple shapes: a heart, a circle, a triangle, a square, a star. The logic is that naming speed draws on the same rapid retrieval machinery that fluent reading depends on, but it does not require any letters or words. That matters, because a task built on letters would penalise a child who is still learning to read the language, and confuse the very distinction the researchers wanted to make.
The study tested 127 primary-school children in grades three to five, aged roughly eight to eleven. They fell into three groups: 64 monolingual Italian children who read well, 20 monolingual children who read poorly, and 43 minority-language children whose home language was not Italian. The design let the researchers compare a genuine reading disorder against reading difficulty that comes from limited language exposure.
The reading results confirmed the setup. The monolingual poor readers lagged far behind the good readers in word-reading fluency, a very large gap (d = 2.12). The minority-language children also scored lower on word-reading accuracy, but the gap was modest (d = 0.59), and on reading invented pseudowords they were indistinguishable from the strong readers. So both struggling groups looked weak on ordinary reading, but for different underlying reasons.
The naming task then pulled the two apart. Among monolingual children, RAN speed tracked reading fluency closely (correlations around 0.58 to 0.60), and slower naming went with more severe reading deficits. The poor readers were markedly slower on every naming grid than the good readers. The minority-language children, by contrast, named the shapes just as fast as the strong readers, with no meaningful difference at all. In short, the task flagged the children with a likely reading disorder while leaving the language-learners alone, and each naming grid predicted poor-reader status in a statistical model.
What it means for you and your child
The appeal here is intuitive. A test that never asks a child to read cannot be thrown off by whether the child has had enough time with the language. For a bilingual household, or a family that has recently moved countries, that is a real advantage. A reading score alone cannot separate a specific difficulty from an ordinary stage of language learning. A naming-speed measure offers a second, independent view, and this study suggests it can help.
It is worth being precise about what the study shows and what it does not. This is a single, small study of 127 children. The struggling groups were modest in size: only 20 monolingual poor readers and 43 minority-language children. Findings from samples this small can shift when a larger group is tested, so the numbers here should be read as promising rather than settled. The authors are careful on this point themselves.
Two limits matter especially for parents. First, all these children read Italian, which is a “shallow” orthography, meaning letters map onto sounds in a highly consistent way. English is the opposite: irregular and unforgiving. The researchers state plainly that they cannot assume their results carry over to other writing systems, and English is exactly the case where that caution bites. Second, they are clear that naming speed is one marker, not a diagnosis. They describe it as a single cognitive signal that must be combined with other tasks before anyone draws a conclusion about a specific child.
There is also a quieter caveat inside the good news. The task told the minority-language children apart from the poor readers because, as a group, their naming speed was normal. But that is a statement about groups, not a guarantee about any one child. A bilingual child can also have dyslexia, and this task does not, on its own, rule that in or out. The authors note that assessing minority-language children reliably will need a richer set of language-free tasks, not this one measure alone.
So what should this change for you? Very little in the way of action, and quite a lot in the way of framing. If your child reads slowly and English is a second language, that slowness is not by itself evidence of a learning difference; naming-speed research is one reason a good assessor treats the two possibilities separately. If you are seeking an evaluation, it is reasonable to ask whether the assessor uses measures that do not depend on reading, and how they weigh a bilingual background. A thorough assessment triangulates: reading, naming speed, phonological skill, family history, and classroom observation. This study strengthens the case for one useful instrument in that toolkit. It does not replace the rest of it, and it was never meant to.
